34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
These two verses are very clear. Upon reading the entirety of 1 Corinthians 1, we find that the church of Corinth is having trouble. It seems as if it has something to do with women causing a ruckus. I don’t blame them, as the King James Bible is rife with chauvinistic bologna.
The statements of these verses are very straightforward. Women should remain silent in church. If they have questions, they should ask their husbands at home. It’s shameful for a women to speak in church.
The social climate of the time was very male-centered, women being regarded as little more than property. However, this does not justify the blatant sexism. Just because they thought it was okay back then does not mean that it was the right thing to do. A just and moral god would never request such a thing. The only explanation is that the King James Bible was written by men, not an all-loving god. Either that, or God just doesn’t think as highly of women as he does of men, which may be the case. If you start at the beginning, the King James Bible starts with women being made for man, in Genesis 2. Then, it just goes downhill from there. From the very beginning, God makes himself out to be a chauvinistic prick.

This was one of the first verses that turned me away from christianity. I simply could not reconcile the concept of an all loving sexist god.

okay hey this scripture was written in a whole different time period you cant even begin to apply that to today and the time we live in now you really think your intelligence is so much greater than those who read these entries

If you were to read above, Amy, then hopefully you understand that we are probably far more intelligent now to realize that women have the potential to be equal in each and every way to men. You say that because it was written in a different time period that we don’t have the intelligence to understand the verse? Then you have suggested the bible’s purpose is null and void considering it was supposed to last through the ages, so that all God’s followers might read and understand his word, was it not? If we aren’t intelligent enough to read and understand the bible, then it is a useless text, devoid of purpose, and that is exactly what we are proving here. Thank you for letting us know we’re on the right track.

This is garbage, the bible isn’t sexist. The church of Corinth was having trouble with arguments or something and it was caused by too many people talking. The law of the land, not the law of the bible, didn’t let women talk over men, so he just told them to do that. You atheists will do anything to make God look bad.

Haha oh angela, we don’t have to make him look bad, judeo-chrstianity makes itself look bad! But on a side note if you want to agree with this verse than I want you to share it in your next little meeting and see what they think about it and if they come up with the bull shit answer of “different time period” just cause its a long time ago doesn’t make it right. Kind of like the bible now that I think on it

It would be an easy excuse for atheists to say God did not leave any instructions for man to guide himself by; it so happens he has, scripture. Just as driver cannot tell a cop he did not know the law, as the cop will tell him/her he had an obligation to know it and that there is a handbook available to know the law, you naysayers are very very wrong when you pick and choose what you want or don’t want to accept from BiBle scripture, it doesn’t work that way. You femenists jump to the wrong conclusions when you think these rules are sexist, they are nothing but. Naturally you would have preferred men be submissive to you instead. There is nothing wrong with knowing your place you just find no pleasure in it that’s all. You want to take advantage of everything man made which you had no or very little part in to toot your horns. Just like man must know his place with regards to God, women should know their place with regards to their husand as children should know their place with regards to their parents. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that just what your paranoid and arrogant knee jerk reactions want to spew without thinking. No matter. You will have your chance to complain to the Almight one day. Good luck with that.

@michael
Keep in mind that I’m not a woman and I still find it appalling. The women I’ve been involved with have always had a “place” and that was right by my side, not behind me in silence. You see, I am confident in my “place” and I don’t need to subjugate anyone to feel like a man.
As far as the “rules” go, how can you claim any hard/fast rules when your religion can’t even agree amongst its various “sects”? Not to mention the fact that a myriad of other religions have their own rules… which they believe to be the one truth. Also, you should read up on the euthyphro dilemma.
I have always said that when I die, if I find that Yahweh is the one true god, and everything in the bible is true, I will personally tell him that he is an ass and I will WALK to hell myself. I would prefer eternal torment to spending one hour in the presence of such an evil being.
