All Scripture is from God

October 22nd, 2010

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

According to 2 Timothy 3, all scripture is inspired by God and illustrates how he believes we should live a good, moral life. These verses are often used to encourage others to read the King James Bible, which The Devil’s Highlighter completely supports.

By using the term scripture, Paul could be referring to the Old Testament specifically or perhaps to the entirety of the King James Bible. Either way, all scripture can be used to determine what is right from what is wrong. This includes the support of rape, slavery, and genocide that are not only condoned but requested or even performed by God on several occasions. These verses lay the blame directly on God for all of the atrocities in the King James Bible.

The Old Law Still Applies

October 22nd, 2010

Matthew 5:17-20

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

In Matthew 5, Jesus says that he did not come to abolish the Old Law. This means that all of the laws proposed by the Old Testament should indeed be followed by those who follow him. There is no indication anywhere in the King James Bible that suggests that Jesus freed anyone from any part of the Law, with the notable exception that he was supposed to be the last sacrifice.

In effect, beyond the necessity to sacrifice animals to God in atonement for sins, all of the laws of the Old Testament must be obeyed. This is an important point, as many Christians will say that they are not bound by the Old Law because of Jesus. It seems that those that use such logic have not properly read the King James Bible.

The Masochistic Prophet

1 Kings 20:35-37

35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.

36 Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.

37 Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.

In 1 Kings 20, a prophet orders his neighbor to hurt him. Apparently, it was a bad idea for his neighbor to refrain from fulfilling his masochistic wishes, because the prophet got a lion to slay him. Then, he found another person who did obey the prophet and hurt him.

The act of someone ordering another to harm one’s self, as well as to threaten death when the order isn’t carried out, is absolutely hilarious. Most of all, it is immoral. In this instance, the nice guy is the one who is punished. Why is it that the person who refuses to harm his neighbor is the one who is devoured by a lion? It doesn’t make any sense.

The Bald Avenger

2 Kings 2:23-25

23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

In 2 Kings 2, Elisha, a former disciple of Elijah, is simply walking along when a group of children begin poking fun at his bald head. There are quite a number of different ways that he could deal with this scenario. He could simply ignore the peanut gallery and continue merrily on his way, he could laugh with the kids and make a few friends in the process, or he could have them all maimed and slaughtered by wild animals. Being a good and saintly fellow, Elisha decided on the most righteous of choices, the mauling.

Apparently, Elisha felt that it would be appropriate to utilize his rancor and call upon God, who then summoned a couple of female bears to tear them limb from limb. That’s a lovely little tale. With inspiring stories such as these, I can see why people call this the Good Book.

Punishment for Ancestor’s Artwork

Exodus 20:4-6

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

I’m sure that you recognize the second commandment when you see it in Exodus 20. However, I don’t think many people know the full text of this commandment. Here, we are told that a graven image consists of any likeness made to appear like anything on, above, or beneath the earth and sea.

Additionally, it is also suggested that not only will you be punished, but your descendants will be punished up to four generations. That means that you could be punished by God for nothing more than the fact that your grandfather doodled a picture of an animal. If you have ever drawn a drawing, chiseled a sculpture, or folded a paper airplane, you have broken this commandment. Apparently, those who do so are also considered to be misotheists, theists who hate God. The offending artist and his or her descendants are punished for it.

It must be noted that there is a specific prescription not to bow down to these graven images. However, it is not part of the requirement for transgression. Note the language used: “Do not make a graven image or likeness” and “Do not bow down to them.” In other words, neither shall you make nor show reverence for graven images, because both actions are sinful.

Couple Killed for Not Being Communists

Acts 5:1-10

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

In Acts 4, we find that the early church is having their members sell everything they have and then give the resulting money to the church. The church would then provide for everyone while everyone has what they needed. In other words, they are communists.

A husband and wife decide to withhold a small portion of the money from the sale of their property so that they will have some for themselves on top of what the apostles allow them to have. For this, they are killed. It says that they simply die, giving up their ghost. Unless these people were so old that they simply had heart-attacks from the stress of being accused of being capitalists, it seems likely that either God or the apostles caused their deaths.

When you consider the fact that all deities are imaginary, you are left with the apostles being little more than cutthroat extorting communists who kill people who attempt to keep what they’ve earned for themselves. Any defense of scripture in this instance will also be a defense of communism, something that the religious right seems to always be fervently opposed to. Any way you slice it, the early church was a communist organization. Additionally, their socialist doctrine was so concrete that death seems to be what happens to capitalists within their ranks.

Death for Bestiality

Leviticus 20:15-16

15 And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast.
16 And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

In Leviticus 20, God says that you are to kill a man or a woman who has intercourse with an animal, and the animal is also to be killed. Is it the animal’s fault that their owner is sexually deviant? Apparently, the creature should have simply refused. Perhaps the animal deserved it for running around naked all the time.

Childbirth is Sinful

Leviticus 12

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

5 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

7 Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

This is Leviticus 12 in its entirety. It’s very clear that a woman who gives birth is made unclean by doing so. She must wait a certain number of days, then have a priest perform both a burnt and sin offering. When she gives birth to a male, she is unclean for one week. When she gives birth to a female, she is unclean for two weeks. Even after she is clean from the birth, she is still unclean from her bleeding and must wait thirty-three days if she gave birth to a male and sixty-six days if she gave birth to a female.

Such a prescription of uncleanliness would prevent a husband from having intercourse with his wife for the specified amount of time. While four to six weeks aligns well with what is stated here, there is no difference between having a male and a female that would warrant such vaginal discrimination. The only thing that seems important is that her bleeding stop so that it’s certain that she has healed before resuming intercourse.

The prescription for her not to enter a temple or touch anything hallowed is basically forcing her to rest, but this does not prevent the woman from working around the house, nor does it treat her with the respect and reverence she deserves for bearing a child. Instead, it suggests that her bearing a child is a sin that she must be purified from.

Would such a passage be written by an all-loving god? Is this this kind of god you want to worship?

Infanticide

November 30th, 2009

Exodus 12:29

29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.

In Exodus 12, God kills all firstborn in Egypt, with the exception of the Israelites who smeared blood over their door, in an effort to force Ramses to release the Israelite slaves. Did these children really deserve it, though?

It was Ramses who refused to let Moses’ people go, not these children. Their only sin was being born first to the oppressors of the Israelites. They were killed to prove a point, but was this really a good thing? All Christians are taught this story, and many take this passage for granted, thinking of the Egyptians as the bad guys. After all, it’s okay for the children of the bad guys to die, right? Absolutely not. Such a stance is morally reprehensible. Why would a just, moral, and loving god kill innocent children?

Some may say that such children, being under the age of accountability, would go straight to Heaven. However, such a mode of thought implies that infanticide is okay. There is no question about it. God has committed infanticide, a highly immoral act.

Global Genocide

Genesis 7:19-23

19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.

20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:

22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

In Genesis 7, it is very plainly stated that God kills everyone on Earth, sparing only Noah and those who are on the ark with him. Of the people he killed, around a third were likely to be children, all of whom would be completely innocent. They would also be well below the age of accountability.

Think about all of the innocent children that God murdered. Think about all of the innocent animals that he caused to suffer and die. If Noah saved two puppies, God killed the rest. If Noah saved two kittens, then how many more did God drown? How many koalas did he drown?

One thing that no one thinks about is what happened when the flood waters receded. Sure, the creatures of the sea survived the flood just fine, but what about all the dolphins that may have been stranded when the waters receded? How much death did he cause? God killed every living thing on the planet, except for what was in one boat.

If you are a Christian, you have to understand that God killed men, women, and children, not to mention countless animals. He drowned them to death by flooding the entire planet. Whether these people were evil or not, he did not give them the chance for redemption. He does not reveal himself to them and tell them to straighten themselves out or else he’d wipe them out. Instead, he reveals himself to one man and tells him to build a boat because he’ll drown everyone but him. It seems to me like God simply enjoys watching people suffer and die, a sentiment that is supported by the rest of the wretched book that is the King James Bible.
